Exploring the Artistry: Types of Techniques in Banarasi Saree Weaving

Each technique imparts a unique aesthetic appeal to the Banarasi saree, making it a treasured piece in any wardrobe.

  1. Tanchoi: This weaving method uses one or two warp threads and closely matched coloured weft threads. This technique creates a self-design, covering the fabric with intricate and small patterns. The result is a fabric with minimal float on the back and gives a satin finish.
  2. Mashru: A traditional technique that blends silk and cotton to create a unique satin fabric. The exterior gleams with the richness of silk, while the interior provides the comfort of cotton.
  3. Meenakari: In this technique, multicoloured resham thread is used in the weave to create intricate floral or paisley motifs, evoking a sense of opulence.
  4. Rangkaat: This method involves tying and dyeing threads before weaving, leading to the creation of colourful, complex patterns on the fabric.
  5. Brocade: Brocade weaving inserts extra threads for patterns in certain fabric parts. These added threads create designs in specific areas instead of weaving across the whole fabric. It's woven using a complex drawloom by two weavers—one manages the top, the other the bottom.
  6. Kadwa: This technique in Banarasi handloom is a meticulous and intricate method of brocading. Unlike other techniques, it involves weaving each motif separately. The weaver manually inserts the extra weft for each motif, eliminating loose threads at the back of the fabric and the need for cutting. Despite its longer process, Kadwa allows for diverse motifs in various sizes, colours, and textures on the same fabric, resulting in an embossed appearance.
  7. Fekua/Cut Work: This weaving style uses extra weft, called the supplementary patterning weft, and is placed across the fabric width using a shuttle. This weft runs from selvage to selvage, intertwining with the structural yarns and forming the design.
  8. Tissue: As the name suggests, tissue sarees blend silk with metallic threads to create a shimmery, lightweight fabric perfect for grand occasions.

Motifs of Banarasi Silk Saree Designs

Our Banarasi saree looks are handwoven with timeless motifs, each telling a unique story:

  • Jal: One of the oldest motifs in Banarasi saree designs, Jal is a sprawling floral design that covers the entire length of the saree. It is a testament to our heritage, demonstrating the artistry of traditional weavers.
  • Aam Buta: Richly detailed mango motifs are symbolic of fertility, love, and prosperity. This motif has been adorning our sarees for centuries, reflecting the quality and timeless appeal of our products.
  • Pan: The betel leaf motif, known as Pan, influenced by nature, is a symbol of freshness and new beginnings. This motif, woven finely into the fabric of the saree, showcases the meticulous craftsmanship involved in creating each piece.
  • Shikargah: A regal motif, Shikargah comprises detailed scenes of hunting, royal processions, and animals, often woven in gold or silver threads. This motif, deeply rooted in tradition, speaks volumes of our age-old association with royalty and aristocracy.
  • Guldasta: The 'bouquet' or Guldasta motif is a classic pattern of flowers and leaves. This motif, which has remained popular over centuries, symbolises our commitment to upholding traditional weaves while meeting contemporary tastes.
